Scientists, peace organizations and civil society initiatives from several European countries have published an open letter warning against further military escalation in the Middle East and calling for stronger diplomatic initiatives by European governments.
“Europe must do everything possible to prevent further military escalation in the Middle East. Diplomacy and international cooperation are the only viable path to prevent the expansion of war and to achieve long-term stability,” said Hannes Jung of the Science4Peace Forum, one of the initiators of the appeal.
Among the first signatories are political scientists Prof. Michael Staack, Prof. August Pradetto and Prof. Johannes Varwick, Dr. Hans von Sponeck – former UN Assistant Secretary-General – as well as peace activist Reiner Braun.
The initiative, launched by Science4Peace, is supported by several organizations, including NatWiss – Responsibility for Peace and Sustainability, the UK’s Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), the International Peace Bureau, the Erhard Eppler Circle and the Information Centre for Militarization (IMI).
The open letter will be presented publicly today at a peace demonstration in Hamburg, Germany.
