A glorious new chapter has been written at the core of multilateral diplomacy. Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, has been elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)- the highest policy-making body of the UN.
In a highly contested, neck-and-neck election held at the UN Headquarters in New York, Dr. Rahman defeated his closest rival, Andreas Kakouris of Cyprus. Bangladesh secured 99 votes against Cyprus’s 91 in a secret ballot. Coming on the eve of the 55th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence, this victory in a forum of 193 member states serves as an undeniable recognition of the country’s rising geopolitical significance and growing diplomatic credibility on the global stage.
A World in Crisis: Navigating Complex Global Challenges
Dr. Khalilur Rahman assumes this apex global leadership role at a time when the world is grappling with compounding geopolitical and environmental crises. The upcoming session is set to confront deeply complex issues, including the protracted conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the intensifying risks of climate change, food and energy insecurity, the global refugee crisis, and the regulation of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Outgoing UNGA President Annalena Baerbock and UN Secretary-General António Guterres have both described the current global climate as a deeply ‘testing time’ for multilateral diplomacy. Against this backdrop, Dr. Rahman’s election is viewed as a pivotal moment for fostering global consensus.
Key Commitments: The Six Pillars of Dr. Rahman’s Agenda
In his immediate post-election remarks, Dr. Khalilur Rahman accepted the responsibility with profound humility and respect. To restore faith in a fragile global order and revitalize multilateralism, he announced six key priorities for his upcoming tenure:
1. International Peace and Security: Prioritizing conflict resolution and the protection of civilians.
2. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Bridging the development financing gap for vulnerable nations and accelerating progress toward the SDGs.
3. Climate Action: Driving impactful, coordinated global measures to combat environmental degradation and climate vulnerabilities.
4. Safeguarding Human Rights: Upholding and ensuring human rights and humanitarian values across the globe.
5. Governance of Emerging Technologies: Implementing the Global Digital Compact to ensure the safe and ethical deployment of AI and new technologies.
6. UN Reform: Revitalizing the United Nations under the ‘UN80’ initiative to transform it into a more efficient, agile, and contemporary institution.
Reflecting on the victory, Dr. Khalilur Rahman stated- ‘This is not just a victory for Bangladesh; it is a victory for multilateralism and international solidarity. I am committed to building a United Nations that is more inclusive, accountable, and responsive to modern challenges, while ensuring that the voices of developing nations are heard louder than ever before.’
An Unprecedented Diplomatic Horizon for Bangladesh
International relations experts believe this prestigious presidency will unlock immense opportunities for Bangladesh to highlight its strategic interests and long-standing challenges on the global stage.
Most notably, the platform will be instrumental in keeping the international community focused on the humanitarian protection of over one million Rohingya refugees sheltered in Bangladesh, while mobilizing global support for a safe and permanent solution to the crisis. Furthermore, it will strengthen Bangladesh’s voice in advocating for the rights of climate-vulnerable nations and smoothing the path for international economic cooperation as the country transitions from a least developed to a developed economy.
Echoes of History: A Legacy Revived After Four Decades
This is not the first time Bangladesh has held the gavel of the UN General Assembly. Exactly 40 years ago, in 1986, Bangladesh’s then-Foreign Minister, Humayun Rasheed Choudhury, served as the President of the 41st UNGA session. Four decades later, Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s election brings Bangladesh back to this prestigious seat of global leadership.
Diplomatic circles note that this historic triumph is the culmination of Bangladesh’s consistent, decades-long contributions as a top UN peacekeeping contributor, its resilience in disaster management, and its proactive humanitarian diplomacy. Dr. Khalilur Rahman will officially assume his one-year historic presidency on September 8, 2026.
