Peru: Building Bridges for Democracy

3 മിനിറ്റ് വായിച്ചു

With just three days to go before the presidential runoff election, various political figures across the country continue to build bridges with candidate Roberto Sánchez Palomino (Together for Peru), joining the effort to restore democracy and good governance.

Today, at a press conference held in downtown Lima, the alliance of “Political Leaders for Governance and the Restoration of Democracy” was announced. These leaders have joined Roberto Sánchez’s campaign “to bring transparency to the government and end corruption in our beloved country—a country that needs truth, hugs, and not bullets,” the politicians said.

Joining the political parties that have already joined the new Government Plan—such as Ahora Nación (Alfonso López Chau), Partido Cívico Obras (Ricardo Belmont), Primero La Gente (Marisol Perez Tello), and Alianza Electoral Venceremos (Ronald Atencio)—were today the Partido Morado (Mesías Guevara), Cooperación Popular (Yonhy Lescano), and George Forsyth (a candidate for Somos Perú, though his party later clarified that his endorsement is “in a personal capacity”).

“From now on, a new phase begins, not seeking the contradictions that divide us, but the things that unite us,” said Ricardo Belmont, while George Forsyth, in turn, told candidate Roberto Sánchez that “together with millions of Peruvians, we are going to take a leap of faith; we are going to vote for you because we want democracy—we do not want to live under a dictatorship. “Don’t let us down; work your hardest for the country, repeal the pro-crime laws, and restore the right to a referendum.”

“I won’t let you down, because I’m walking alongside my family and decent men to restore Peru,” candidate Sánchez Palomino finally replied.

Within the virtual alliance, plans have been made for “a national television channel that understands what Peru is, because right now we have our backs turned on it; and we’re going to hold ‘morning briefings’ so that people are informed, for the transparency of government actions,” Belmont added.

Signing of the 6 Democratic Conditions

Candidate Roberto Sánchez also met with Delia Espinoza, dean of the Lima Bar Association (CAL), the Historic Citizen Agreement (AHC), and labor unions to endorse the 6 Democratic Conditions, stating that “Yes, we are in complete agreement. They (the Historic Citizens’ Agreement) are insisting not only on institutional standards but also on development standards, incorporating the perspective of citizens and the local community. And that seems fundamental to us.”

Likewise, this morning the Congress of the Republic suspended Thursday’s plenary session, preventing a debate on candidate Sánchez Palomino’s request to repeal the “pro-crime laws” that are being challenged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and various sectors of the justice system because they undermine the fight against organized crime.
