As the landscape of international geopolitics shifts toward new alliances and changing balances of power, two emerging forces from South Asia and the Middle East-Bangladesh and Türkiye- stand at a historic crossroads. Following the recent visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to Dhaka, the relationship between the two nations has transcended traditional diplomacy, entering a new era of ‘Strategic Partnership.’
A New Geopolitical Equation

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s visit was far more than a routine diplomatic engagement. During his high-profile three-day tour, he held extensive meetings with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. The most significant outcome of these dialogues was the formal agreement to elevate bilateral ties to an institutionalized ‘Strategic Partnership.’

Diplomatic analysts suggest that this Dhaka-Ankara axis could create a new center of gravity in South Asian politics and the broader Muslim world.
Defense and ‘2+2’ Dialogue: New Horizons of Cooperation
A landmark achievement of the visit was the breakthrough in defense cooperation. For the first time, both nations have decided to launch a ‘2+2 Dialogue,’ a framework where the Foreign and Defense Ministers of both countries will convene for annual strategic summits.
* Joint Production: Detailed discussions were held regarding technology transfer and joint ventures in manufacturing Türkiye’s advanced drone technology, military vehicles, and naval vessels.
* Strategic Security: As Türkiye becomes a premier supplier in the global defense market, its involvement in Bangladesh’s military modernization is expected to elevate the latter’s defense capabilities to unprecedented levels.
Economic Corridors and Trade Targets
Current bilateral trade stands at approximately $1.3 billion, with a target to exceed $2 billion in the coming years.
‘Bangladesh is no longer just a market; it is a powerhouse of South Asia. We have proposed dedicated Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for Turkish investors’- Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.
The prospects for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) or an interim Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) are now at an all-time high. A new wave of Turkish investment is anticipated in sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy.
Humanitarian Diplomacy and the Rohingya Crisis
Türkiye has remained a steadfast ally of Bangladesh regarding the Rohingya crisis since its inception. During his visit, Hakan Fidan toured the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar, reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to humanitarian aid. It is evident that Türkiye will continue to serve as one of the strongest voices for Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue within international forums like the UN and the OIC.
Erdogan’s Potential Visit: A Historic Milestone Awaited
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has extended an official invitation to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to visit Bangladesh. It is speculated that this visit, likely to take place in late 2026, will formalize the strategic partnership through a series of high-level treaties.
Pressenza Analysis: Why It Matters
In a world increasingly leaning toward multipolarity, the synergy between Bangladesh’s policy of ‘Friendship to all, malice toward none’ and Türkiye’s growing regional influence sends a powerful message. This is not merely a transaction of arms or goods; it is a reflection of ‘South-South Cooperation’ built on mutual sovereignty and the aspirations of two emerging economies.
The new journey of Dhaka and Ankara is not confined within their borders; it marks the beginning of a significant chapter in the diplomacy of the Muslim world and global power dynamics.
