A new chapter of political turmoil and controversy has unfolded around Shakib Al Hasan, one of the most successful all-rounders in Bangladesh’s cricket history. Following his participation in a contentious political press conference held in India, Bangladesh’s new Youth and Sports Ministry has toughened its stance regarding his return to the country and his legal standing.
The star cricketer, who dominated international cricket for years as a world-class player, now finds himself at the center of legal complexities, political ties, and public backlash in the wake of this year’s mass uprising and the resulting political shifts.
Political Background and Silence During the Uprising
Shakib Al Hasan was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Magura-1 constituency as a candidate for the ousted Awami League in the 12th National Parliamentary Election. During the student-led mass movement in July-August 2024, Shakib was staying abroad. His complete silence during the intense anti-government protests and casualties caused widespread disappointment among citizens and fans alike. Although he later expressed regret for his silence in an interview, public discontent persisted.
Following the fall of the government, multiple legal proceedings were initiated against Shakib, including murder charges, as well as allegations of corruption and financial irregularities. Shakib has consistently maintained that these charges are ‘politically motivated.’
Delhi Press Conference and Renewed Polarization
A fresh controversy erupted on August 5, when Shakib was seen attending a virtual press conference in New Delhi, India, hosted by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina- on the very day the country was marking July Mass Uprising Day.
In a subsequent interview with the international news agency Reuters, Shakib clarified his position, stating:
‘Sheikh Hasina is my captain. We will do whatever the captain says.’
In the same interview, he mentioned that if Sheikh Hasina returned to the country in December, he intended to return as well. He added that if the government ensured his safety, he was ready to face all ongoing legal cases in court and expressed a desire to retire from international cricket on Bangladeshi soil.
Shortly after these developments, Shakib’s ancestral home in Magura was vandalized and faced an attempted arson attack, further heightening tensions.
Strict Government Stance and Legal Warnings
Addressing Shakib’s recent actions and statements, the State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haq, reiterated the government’s firm stance. Speaking to reporters, he noted that while the administration previously viewed his situation with leniency considering his status as an athlete, that flexibility is no longer on the table.
The Sports Minister stated directly- ‘We were viewing the matter very flexibly and tolerantly. After this, I don’t think there is any scope to think that way anymore. For someone who has stepped onto the stage of autocracy, I don’t see any opportunity for a return in that manner. What we were considering for him as a player… there is no opportunity for that anymore. If he returns, he will return through the legal process.’

Shakib has been the architect of countless victories across all three formats for Bangladesh and served as the nation’s main pillar in global tournaments, including the ICC World Cups. However, contrasting his legendary sporting career, his political choices and recent actions on the international stage have placed him at a complex crossroads in national politics and public discourse.
Once a celebrated national sports hero, Shakib Al Hasan is no longer viewed solely through the lens of cricket; rather, he has become a central and heavily debated figure in Bangladesh’s ongoing socio-political transformation.
