Taming Inflation and Ensuring Implementation Amid Economic Hurdles

By Zahida Parvez Chhanda (Dhaka Bureau)
Amidst global economic uncertainties, high inflation, and intense pressure on domestic revenue mobilization, Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliament is set to pass a massive BDT 9.38 trillion national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year today, June 30 (Tuesday). Following the passage of the tax and tariff-related ‘Finance Bill 2026’ in parliament yesterday, June 29, the main budget will be finalized today through a final voice vote.
As the first full-fledged budget of the new government, this fiscal blueprint is being viewed not merely as an annual constitutional formality, but as the ultimate test of economic recovery and governance. Here is a special review of Bangladesh’s new budget and its underlying challenges for Pressenza readers:
1. Inflation and Daily Life: The Core Challenge
Over the past few years, persistently high inflation in Bangladesh has severely impacted the livelihoods of ordinary citizens. Skyrocketing food prices and rising transportation costs have significantly eroded the real income of the lower and middle classes. Ever since Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury presented this budget on June 11, the primary debate has centered around how this inflation will be effectively controlled.
Economists point out that the success of this budget will not be measured by the size of its allocations, but by its capacity to stabilize market management, generate employment, and relieve ordinary citizens from aggressive tax burdens to ensure its humanitarian and economic efficacy.
2. Revenue Mobilization and Tax Structure
To implement a massive budget of BDT 9.38 trillion, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) faces its toughest test yet. Expanding the tax net and increasing the number of active taxpayers have been long-standing demands in Bangladesh. Experts argue that rather than hiking existing tax rates on the general public, the government must focus on preventing tax evasion and modernizing a digital tax administration.
The business community and small entrepreneurs remain hopeful that some last-minute flexibility might emerge regarding certain VAT and tax proposals that directly impact consumer-level prices.
3. Development Projects and Implementation Capacity
A recurring and long-standing challenge in Bangladesh’s fiscal management is the slow pace of project implementation and subsequent cost overruns. Executing the Annual Development Programme (ADP) transparently and within the stipulated timeframe remains a top priority for the new administration. Ensuring that human resource development and welfare-oriented sectors- such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and social safety nets- utilize their allocated funds efficiently is a vital prerequisite for good governance.

Pressenza Perspective: Why This Budget Matters
From the standpoint of human economics and social justice, this budget holds critical significance for Bangladesh. Striking a balance between the demand for development spending and the ongoing pressures on foreign exchange reserves requires navigating a tightrope in the face of global geopolitical impacts.
As the budget goes into effect on July 1, the ultimate outcome will determine whether these numbers remain a mere statistical exercise on paper, or if they genuinely translate into a robust social safety net and an improved quality of life for the people.
