The wind has shifted in Canada and we must resist violence by saying No to the militarization of the Arctic

For the past few months, my son has been constantly talking about moving to Spain. According to him, Spain is one of the few countries that remains open to diversity of ideas and one of the few countries opposes to the militarization of the world as a means to resolve global conflicts.

When he told me about his plan, I explained that Canada remains a peaceful country.

In fact, the Canadian government was quite effective with the US government threat to attempts to annex Canada and make it the 51st American state.

I reminded to my son of the BDC advertisement that speaks precisely about our desire in Canada to take control of our destiny and our economy.

But lately, I have to say that I’m starting to agree with my son and seriously considering making Spain my adopted country!

Why?

It is true that Canada has taken significant steps to forged partnerships with several countries, including China, India, and Europe, to reduce its dependence on American markets. But on the other hand, the Canadian government seems to have caught the same affliction as several European leaders. This affliction involves perceiving potential enemies everywhere: in the Americans, in the Russians, and so on.

As proof, the canadian government just concluded an agreement with a German company for the purchase and delivery of 12 submarines at the NATO summit. According to the Canadian government, these submarines will protect the Arctic from a potential Russian or others ennemies invasion!

In my opinion, this is ridiculous, since the Russians also possess parts of the Arctic, such as Greenland, Norway, and Alaska. Nevertheless, instead of attempting to negotiate a common approach about the resources in Arctic, the canadian government is advancing with this confrontational approach. Moreover this approach is support by many European countries.

The submarine bill is over $80 billion, and Ottawa has remained vague about the sacrifices Canadians will have to make to finance the skyrocketing increase in military spending.

Will taxes have to be raised?

Old age pensions reduced?

Health and education services cut?

Dear: Mr. Prime Minister, I have a solution to avoid sacrificing the living standards of some Canadians: cancel this deal. Come to your senses, invest Canadians’ money in renewable energy and new infrastructure! Or follow the example of the Spanish government and tell Mr. Rutte that the direct services in education and health to the Canadian population is the priority and not the military industry profit.
