The national budget for the new fiscal year is set to be presented in the National Parliament of Bangladesh on June 11. Surrounding this budget, alongside the country’s economic and social sectors, an unprecedented wave of expectation is building up within the sports arena. The current government has taken an initiative to reshape Bangladesh’s sports sector, which has long suffered from limited allocations, infrastructural crises, and extreme financial instability, with a completely new and humane approach. Instead of viewing sports merely as entertainment or on-field competition, this budget is expected to reflect a long-term blueprint to establish it as a promising profession and a tool for the social security of the youth.
Sports Card and Athletes’ Welfare: A Humane and Structural Safety Net
One of the most revolutionary and discussed initiatives in the recent sports history of Bangladesh is the ‘Sports Card’ and ‘Sports Allowance’ program. In the past, despite bringing honor to the country at the international level, many athletes faced severe financial hardships; some were even forced to prematurely leave their beloved sports to earn a livelihood. To put an end to this tragic reality, the government has, for the first time, built a structured welfare system.
In the first phase, 129 national-level athletes have already been brought under the coverage of this Sports Card and direct financial assistance. The upcoming budget plans to expand the scope of this benefit to include several hundred more athletes. According to sports experts, this is not merely a financial grant, but rather a historic state recognition of the social and professional dignity of the athletes.
However, the government’s plan is not limited only to the players on the field. To build a robust sports ecosystem, there is a growing demand for a long-term and integrated support structure for coaches, trainers, physiotherapists, umpires, referees, and sports administrative officials alongside the players. This demand is likely to receive special priority in this budget.
Grassroots Talent Development and the Battle to Free Youth from Tech Addiction
One of the top priorities of the current government’s sports policy is the expansion of sports at the grassroots level. Most of Bangladesh’s international-standard athletes have emerged from remote districts, sub-districts (upazilas), or rural backgrounds. Keeping this reality in mind, plans are underway to revitalize the school- and college-based sports framework. To increase student participation in various disciplines- including football, cricket, kabaddi, volleyball, handball, and athletics- emphasis is being placed on regular institution-based competitions and long-term talent hunt programs.
At the same time, due to the technology-dependent lifestyle of the contemporary world, excessive screen time, and intense social media addiction, a trend of turning away from the playground has emerged among the younger generation. This is a major concern for public health and social psychology. To bring the new generation back to the playing fields and ensure their physical and mental well-being, there are high expectations for increased allocations in youth-centric sports activities.
The Unprecedented Surge in Women’s Sports and the Call for Equality
In recent years, Bangladesh’s international success in women’s football and women’s cricket has ushered in a new era in the country’s sports arena. It has been proven that if given the proper opportunities and a safe environment, women can brighten the country’s name on the global stage.
To propel women’s sports forward, the government is now focusing on increasing female participation at the grassroots level- that is, at the district and upazila levels- and not just in national teams. Plans are being made to ensure a safe sporting environment for girls at the school and college levels, establish modern accommodation and intensive training camps, and implement special social programs to inspire families to encourage girls to play. Those involved in sports are deeply optimistic that there will be special financial and structural incentives for female athletes in this budget.
Infrastructure Reform, Modernization of Federations, and Sports Economy
One of the biggest bottlenecks in Bangladesh’s sports sector is the lack of modern infrastructure and dilapidated stadiums. In the new budget, a large allocation may come for the development of fields at the district and upazila levels, the construction of modern gymnasiums, and the expansion of indoor stadium facilities.
In addition, emphasis is being placed on capacity building, financial transparency, accountability, and technology-driven administrative reforms of the national sports federations. At the same time, experts are now highlighting the importance of the ‘Sports Economy’. If sectors like sponsorship, broadcasting rights, sports tourism, and sports marketing can be developed, they will create new employment opportunities in the country’s economy.
Pressenza Perspective: Sports as a Vehicle for Humane Development and Peace
Pressenza has always believed that sports is not just a battle for winning medals; it is a powerful medium for establishing non-violence, equality, and humane solidarity in society. When the government of Bangladesh creates a social security net like the ‘Sports Card’ to establish sports as a secure profession, it sets a humane example in the international arena. This state endeavor to involve neglected youth at the grassroots level, and women in sports will act as a catalyst in building an egalitarian and healthy society. It is now everyone’s expectation that the budget of June 11 will not just be a calculation of numbers, but a new document for the humane transformation of Bangladesh’s youth and sports arena.
