EUnited for Equality: Youth against femicide

8 മിനിറ്റ് വായിച്ചു

EUnited for Equality is a non-violent European campaign, carried out entirely by youth between 19 and 29 years old, coming from France, Latvia and Italy.

The aim of this campaign is to obtain an effective and efficient definition of femicide in all EU member-countries. It is important to clarify that this initiative is not focused on the legal aspect of femicide and does not demand to establish it as an independent crime, as instead has just happened in Italy. Rather, the initiative starts from a reflection on data collection of gender based violence and femicide on a European and national level. We can observe that the data collected by European institutions is coming from National Statistical Institutes, often turning out to be incomplete and not harmonised between different Countries, making a systematic comparison almost impossible.

In contrast compared to other forms of violence against women, in this case a harmonised statistical approach is still lacking, both at a regional and global level. This would be useful to produce and define indicators on women and girls’ killings based on gender-related motives. For this reason, the United Nations Statistical Commission has asked the UNODC to develop a “statistical frame aiming to reach a common definition of gender-related crime statistics, focusing in particular on gender-related killings of women and girls (femicide)”.

EUnited for Equality is therefore also planning to launch a petition to submit to the EU five years after the approval of the UN statistical framework in order to actually implement the measures. We strongly believe that by substituting fragmentated national data collection with this harmonised method, the EU could ensure data comparability. This would bring out hidden trends and allow the development of prevention politics based on empirical evidence, in order to effectively protect women’s lives.

What is InclusiVoice?

The campaign inserts itself in the Erasmus+ Small Scale project “InclusiVoice” that sees the collaboration between the leader partner Forlì Centre of Peace, Euromed Feminist Initiative and Women’s NGOs Cooperation Network of Latvia. The Centre of Peace conceived the project by combining years of non-violence work with a cause the staff really cares for: spreading awareness on gender-based violence.

InclusiVoice was created with the aim to build a non-violent European campaign entirely planned by the youth. For this purpose a total of three mobilities has been realised: the first one in Vernon (France) in May 2025, the second one in Riga (Latvia) in September 2025, and the last one right in Forlì (Italy) in April 2026.

If in the first two mobilities the involved youth was of a limited number, one or two girls for each partner association, in Forlì a total of 24 people participated. This experience was the heart of the project: a training that could allow the participants to acquire skills on non-violent campaigning and gender-based violence.

In particular, the Italian delegation began working on spreading awareness before the official start of the campaign. Alessia Prenjasi, Valentina Vannini and Ester Quartieri, the first three italian project participants, wrote a report called : “Femicides in Italy: A Critical Investigation Based on Data and Dynamics Analysis” that was presented in Forlì’s Centre of Peace and Forlì’s University Campus.

InclusiVoice Training in Forlì

The training was carried out between the 13th and the 18th of April 2026, and it was composed of two syllables, one on nonviolence and the other on gender-based violence.

Following the first syllabus, the participants acquired theoretical knowledge on non-violence principles, but also practical skills related to non-violent campaigning, peacebuilding and useful tools to manage and design campaigns or Non-violent Direct Actions. Raffaele Barbiero, in charge of the Peace Centre, and Martina Pignatti, expert of peacebuilding, also participated as trainers.

Other trainers participated to the second part of the program: Chiara Tammaro and Sara Bomben, co-founders of #SpeakUp; Veronica Amadori, psychologist working in contact with victims of domestic violence; Martina Rubechini and Maria Pia Sciarappa of Forlì Woman Centre. The participants reflected on the root causes of gender based violence, on stereotypes and discriminations. They investigated sociological and psychological concepts tied to the phenomenon, but also deepened ideas related to the functioning of anti-violence centres.

Campaign’s inauguration

The last day of training coincided with the Campaign’s launch. The young women had already started to plan it months before, after Riga’s meeting, through periodical online meetings.

On Saturday 18th April 2026 at 6pm., Piazza Saffi was transformed into a space to reflect and denounce, right on time for the kickoff of EUnited for Equality. As a symbol of the women who died as victims of femicide, a coffin covered by a white sheet with the names of the most recent victims from France, Italy and Latvia was carried. Those who were attending formed a human chain, youth and elders holding each other’s hands, transforming pain in civic engagement.

People were invited to write down their stories on gender-based violence and discrimination in an anonymous way. The many stories collected were put on a virtual map created with the purpose to give voice to those who daily suffer this kind of violence. The stories can be accessed through eunited4equality.web.app, and can be shared in a totally anonymous way and with a general localisation level, even by just indicating the country. This part of the Campaign aims to highlight that gender-based violence is a widespread problem, present in every woman’s life, although with different shades.

The deputy mayor also intervened during the demonstration, reaffirming the importance of non-violent actions like this, that are intense but necessary. Counselor Sansavini’s support to the community was also expressed, even though she could not attend due to other institutional engagements.

The demonstration also represents a key step of EUnited for Equality’s path, that will continue in the next months through new initiatives, meetings, and awareness campaigns on a local and European level, led by the partaker youth.
