In a move that marks a new chapter in regional geopolitical shifts, Bangladesh is moving forward with a massive defensive deal worth nearly $1 billion with China. According to international media reports, the plan to acquire 24 advanced Chinese J-10CE multirole fighter jets is expected to be announced during Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to China this week.
Diplomatic sources indicate that Dhaka aims to finalize this historic fighter jet agreement by August. With each aircraft estimated at around $40 million, the successful conclusion of this deal would represent one of the largest military modernizations in Bangladesh’s recent history.
Strategic Balance or the Vortex of Militarization?
This deepening military partnership between Bangladesh and China comes at a time of intensifying military and strategic competition among superpowers in South Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific region. While China has long been the primary supplier of military hardware to Bangladesh, the proposed acquisition of J-10CE fighter jets elevates their defense relationship to an unprecedented level.
Analysts note that Bangladesh has traditionally pursued a neutral foreign policy, guided by the principle of “Friendship to all, malice towards none.” However, in the complex matrix of contemporary global politics, maintaining a fine balance between Western powers and Asian giants is putting Dhaka’s diplomatic agility to a rigorous test.
Reflecting this tightening bond ahead of the visit, Bangladesh’s foreign secretary described China as a ‘very close friend, strategic partner, and a crucial commercial and development ally.’ He noted that the relationship has now evolved into a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.’
Economic Agenda and Regional Influence
Defense is not the only priority on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s agenda; sustainable development and economic cooperation also hold significant weight. Beyond attending the World Economic Forum’s 17th “Summer Davos” summit, the Prime Minister is expected to oversee the signing of 17 key documents with the Chinese leadership, including 15 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).
Concurrently, the long-delayed Teesta River mega-project is slated for discussion. These infrastructure developments are expected to be reviewed through the lens of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and President Xi Jinping’s broader regional economic vision.
A Call for Peace and Sustainable Development
Amidst the high-stakes economic and military deliberations, Bangladesh continues to project its sustainable development and climate agenda on the international stage. At the Summer Davos summit, Prime Minister Rahman is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on climate leadership and sustainable development. He will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Vietnam, and South Korea to discuss climate crises and regional stability.
Pressenza’s Perspective:
As Bangladesh charts a path toward a $1 billion fighter jet deal to modernize its armed forces, questions inevitably arise regarding the future of weapon proliferation and militarization in the region. From the global standpoint of peace, non-violence, and disarmament, it remains to be seen how such agreements will impact the regional balance of power- and how a developing nation reconciles expensive military expenditures with the fundamental needs of its people. Ultimately, this visit to Beijing signifies more than just national military modernization; it is a clear indicator of China’s expanding geopolitical footprint in South Asia.
