Today Abdul El-Sayed condemns Hamas for war crimes while accusing Israel of committing a genocide. Following his recent primary victory, Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed acknowledged that Hamas was responsible for war crimes while reiterating his accusations of genocide against the Israeli government. During an appearance on the USA Jim Acosta Show, El-Sayed addressed his position directly and said,
I condemned Hamas on day one, right? I think they’re wrong. I think they committed war crimes. That’s not hard to say.
The progressive nominee then pivoted to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, claiming,
I just don’t know why it’s also not hard to say that in response, the Israeli government also committed war crimes, including genocide.
According to Dr. James J. Zogby, the author of Arab Voices (2010) and the founder and president of the Arab American Institute, El-Sayed’s Michigan Primary Victory Was a Big Deal.
His win proved that a pro-Palestinian progressive could triumph over AIPAC, dark money, and the Democratic establishment. I believe, will be seen as this year’s most significant election; it was the first time that Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza and massive US military support to Israel became central themes that were actively debated across the state. This issue has come up in a few other races. But this Senate race was different. There were daily discussions about the fact that the US has been subsidizing Israeli policies that have taken such a huge toll on Palestinians and Lebanese. From the results it is clear: Israel and the candidate that supported Israel, four term congresswoman, Rep. Haley Stevens, both lost. (Common Creatives)
Zogby add, the another major issue actively debated in this contest was the role of “dark money” and other independent expenditures. We’ve seen dark money dominate campaigns in the past. But never at this level. At last count, Stevens had received upwards of $70 million, with the bulk of these funds coming directly from pro-Israel groups, led by the Israel lobby, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). In contrast, El-Sayed’s campaign was fueled largely by small donors. Overall, Stevens and AIPAC outspent El-Sayed by a margin of over 11 to one! In the end, dark money and AIPAC were resoundingly defeated, proving that money can prop up a candidate but cannot automatically win an election. (Common Creative)
The El-Sayed-Stevens contest also became a national face-off between the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and the party’s establishment, with leading Democrats from both wings endorsing and campaigning in the state. El-Sayed’s win in this bellwether Midwestern battleground state represents a major win for progressives. It demonstrated that the “establishment” itself has become toxic to many Democratic voters. Heathcare is a universal human right
During his campaign in Michigan El-Syed proposes a healthcare system accessible to all and several measures similar to those of the new mayor of New York.
In an era where many of us can’t afford basic things like groceries or rent or healthcare, the idea that your government is sending your tax dollars to buy bombs and tanks for foreign governments seems anathema,” El-Sayed says. “That money could be spent to fix your potholes, rebuild your kid’s school, said El-Sayed. But, both moderate Democrats and Republicans, accuse him of being too left-wing and some called El-Sayed a communist. Yet proposing a universal healthcare system has nothing to do with communism. Canadians have access to a universal healthcare system for over 70 years, yet Canada has never been a communist country; worse, Canada has never had any opposition from a communist party in the country’s parliament.
But, for several years now, the Canadian healthcare system is under pressure from large insurance companies, mostly American, that are constantly lobbying for the privatization of the canadian healthcare system.
Progressive Canadian politicians, who want to maintain the universality of the healthcare system and the access for all, would be well advised to educate Republican politicians and moderate American Democrats about the advantages of implementing a universal healthcare system in the United States. They should explain that heathcare is a universal human right and has nothing to do with communist.
Please, pro US big-insurance politicians stop feeding us with your nonsense and false ideas about healthcare system for all! from a proud Canadian who defends the universal right to a healthcare system for all.
