In a move signaling a new equation in South Asian geopolitics and water management, Bangladesh has sought China’s active involvement and support for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP). The proposal was tabled during a crucial bilateral meeting between Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, held in Beijing on Wednesday (May 6).
This marks Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s first official visit to China as the Foreign Minister of the newly formed BNP government. The visit sends a strong message regarding the further consolidation of the long-term strategic partnership between the two nations.
A joint statement released after the meeting noted that Bangladesh expects China’s technical and financial cooperation for the extensive management and ecological restoration of the Teesta River. Experts believe that China’s potential participation in resolving this long-standing, unresolved water-sharing issue is highly significant for regional politics.
Both sides agreed to enhance high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), increasing investment in the digital economy, water resource management, and industrial sectors. Bangladesh praised the successful launch of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and pledged to work as complementary partners in each other’s development strategies.

‘One China’ Policy and Geopolitical Solidarity
A major portion of the meeting focused on diplomatic positions and global security issues:

The Taiwan Issue: Bangladesh reaffirmed that ‘Taiwan is an inseparable part of China.’ In accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, Bangladesh expressed firm adherence to the ‘One China’ policy, opposed Taiwan’s independence, and supported China’s efforts toward national reunification.
Sovereignty: In return, China assured its full respect and support for Bangladesh’s national independence, territorial integrity, and the development path chosen by its people.

Middle East and Rohingya Crisis
Deep concern was expressed regarding the situation in the Middle East. Praising the peace proposal put forward by President Xi Jinping, Bangladesh called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and across the Middle East. Both countries pledged to work together to maintain normal navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and ensure the safety of civilians.
The Rohingya repatriation issue was also discussed. China is committed to maintaining its role as a mediator between Bangladesh and Myanmar to facilitate the safe and sustainable repatriation of displaced persons from Rakhine State.
Global Initiatives and a Shared Future
Dr. Khalilur Rahman praised President Xi Jinping’s global initiatives aimed at building a ‘Community with a Shared Future for Mankind.’ Both parties agreed on establishing a multilateral and equitable world order where disputes are resolved through peaceful dialogue.
Concluding the meeting, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman thanked his counterpart for the warm hospitality and extended an invitation to Wang Yi to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time.
