Tensions have flared significantly along the Bangladesh-India border following a series of coordinated pushback attempts by India’s Border Security Force (BSF). Dozens of individuals, including women and children, have been left stranded in the perilous neutral zone or ‘no-man’s land’ after the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) successfully blocked their forced entry into the country.
Bangladeshi authorities have sharply criticized the Indian border forces, accusing the BSF of attempting to forcefully deport individuals into Bangladesh without adhering to established, legally binding bilateral repatriation procedures.
Stranded in the No-Man’s Land: A Humanitarian Emergency
The situation has escalated across multiple frontier districts, leaving vulnerable groups exposed to severe conditions:
* Chapainawabganj Border: At the Bangabari sector, a group of 28 individuals- comprising 12 men, 10 women, and 6 children- remains trapped in the neutral zone after BGB personnel blocked their entry. Pushed across by the BSF’s 12th Battalion, the group has spent more than 24 hours exposed to torrential rain with a critical shortage of food, clean water, and medical aid. Local officials report that at least one elderly woman has fallen dangerously ill.
* Naogaon Border: Further west in Sapahar, 17 people are caught on the zero line. Prevented from crossing by BGB troops and vigilant local residents, some members of this group claimed they were rounded up by political actors deep within India and transported directly to the frontier.
* Lalmonirhat & Panchagarh Borders: In Aditmari (Lalmonirhat), BGB patrols spotted 12 individuals near the border pillars. BGB troops resorted to loudspeaker warnings and initiated contact with the BSF to prevent another pushback. Meanwhile, in Panchagarh, another group of 10 people remains stranded following a complete deadlock in local-level military talks.
Disputes Over Identity and Citizenship
The crisis is further complicated by conflicting claims regarding the status of those stranded. Several individuals trapped at the border assert they are Bangladeshi nationals who have been living and working in India for years. While local authorities from Bangladesh’s coastal Khulna district have reportedly verified and provided national identity documents for some of them, the overall geopolitical dispute regarding their legal citizenship remains entirely unresolved.
Though a battalion commander-level flag meeting was convened between the BGB and BSF, the Indian side merely acknowledged transferring the group to the zero line but failed to offer any immediate or viable resolution to take them back.
Border Vigilance Tightened Ahead of Eid
With intelligence indicating increased attempts to deport undocumented individuals into Bangladesh, the BGB has intensified its patrols across the northern and western border districts ahead of the Eid holidays. Dhaka has maintained a strict stance, insisting that no individuals will be permitted to cross into Bangladesh without comprehensive verification and formal legal protocols.
The BSF has yet to issue an official public statement regarding these coordinated pushback allegations.
Pressenza Analysis: The Price of Political Impasse
This unfolding border crisis underscores the severe humanitarian toll of the unresolved socio-political disputes in South Asia. Issues surrounding citizenship, illegal migration, and undocumented residents have long strained relations between Dhaka and New Delhi.
However, as the diplomatic and political deadlock continues to play out in high-level offices, it is the ordinary men, women, and children trapped under open skies in the no-man’s land who pay the ultimate price, fighting an immediate and desperate battle for food, shelter, and survival.
