Just a few weeks ago, the green and red landscape of Bangladesh had transformed entirely into sky blue and white. From the bustling avenues of the capital to rural village paths, university campuses to local neighborhood alleys- one topic dominated every conversation: Lionel Messi and his Argentine squad. Millions of fans held an unshakeable belief that Messi would script another World Cup fairy tale to end his legendary career. However, as the final whistle blew in the thrilling 2026 World Cup final, those vibrant dreams shattered in an instant. With Argentina’s defeat to Spain, the roaring celebrations of millions of Bangladeshi supporters came to a sudden, echoing silence.
Preparations for a Grand Celebration

Unprecedented preparations had taken place across every corner of Bangladesh ahead of the final match. Homes prepared special feasts, and friends and families gathered to watch the game together. Major shopping hubs in Dhaka, including New Market, Bashundhara City, and Gauchhia, were flooded with sky-blue-and-white jerseys, flags, caps, and wristbands. The iconic colors even adorned traditional saris, salwar-kameezes, and children’s clothing.
Beyond private gatherings, giant screens were erected nationwide. From the university campuses in Dhaka to the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur- where the Bangladesh Cricket Board organized a mass viewing event for thousands- the sea of fans created an atmosphere reminiscent of Buenos Aires itself.
Two Rivalries, One Unified Disappointment
Football fandom in Bangladesh has long been divided between two powerhouse nations: Brazil and Argentina. However, following Brazil’s unexpected exit in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals, half the nation’s fanbase was plunged into early heartbreak. Consequently, the country’s entire footballing passion converged on Argentina and captain Lionel Messi. Reminiscing over the glorious 2022 victory, fans eagerly awaited another historic night.
Pitch Realities and a Night of Silence
The reality on the pitch unfolded differently. Spain’s dynamic, organized football put Argentina under relentless pressure from the start. The expected fluid attack and magical moments from Messi were smothered by Spain’s precise passing and midfield control. A late red card for Enzo Fernández left Argentina down to ten men, and Ferran Torres’ goal in extra time sealed Spain’s victory, breaking the hearts of fans thousands of miles away in Bangladesh.
Supporters found it difficult to accept such a painful conclusion to Messi’s final World Cup appearance. As the final whistle blew, the once-boisterous crowds gathering before massive screens fell utterly silent.

The 2026 World Cup was not just a sports tournament for Bangladesh; it was an emotional journey of hope and identity. With Argentina’s defeat in the final, the vibrant energy faded overnight. The songs of celebration turned into profound quietness, leaving behind the heavy sigh of an unfulfilled dream for millions.
