DRU Unveils ‘Kanthaswar’ and Holds Discussion

Rozina Rozi (Dhaka Bureau): To mark International Women’s Day 2025, the Financial Institutions Division Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Nazma Mobarek, unveiled the special publication ‘Kanthaswar’ of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

The unveiling ceremony, discussion meeting, and cake-cutting event were organized on Saturday morning (May 10) at the DRU’s Shafiqul Kabir Hall on the occasion of Women’s Day.

Speaking as the chief guest, Nazma Mobarek said that Women’s Day is very important, and women’s contribution is significant in all social and economic spheres. However, women are lagging behind in education and health. They have not yet reached important decision-making positions. She further said that women journalists are working in risky environments. But women are not behind men in their work.

The event was presided over by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, and the welcome address was given by General Secretary Maynul Hasan Sohel.

Speaking as a special guest, Assistant Attorney General Advocate Runa Laila said that women themselves must come forward to protect women’s rights. She greeted all women at the Women’s Day event. The GM of US-Bangla Airlines Kamrul Islam also spoke at the event.

The program was moderated by the Women Affairs Secretary, Rozina Rozi. Others who spoke at the event included DRU Vice-President Gazi Anwar, Joint Secretary Nadia Sharmin, former Finance Secretary Md. Shafiqul Islam, former Executive Member Ashish Kumar Dey, senior journalists Khatune Jannat Kona, Taskina Yasmin, and Zahida Parvez Chhanda.

Dhaka Reporters Unity’s Women’s Affairs Editor Rozina Rozi is officially given the crest of honor at the Women’s Day program.

DRU President Abu Saleh Akon said that there is no discrimination between male and female members of the Dhaka Reporters Unity. We are each other’s allies in the advancement of women. All members of DRU highly respect women. There is equal rights for men and women here.

DRU General Secretary Maynul Hasan Sohel said that men and women are not rivals but are complementary to each other. They are fellow travelers in each other’s development. Yet, even today, women have to struggle relentlessly for equal rights. In some cases, they are still deprived of their rights simply because they are women. No development and progress of civilization is possible without women. If women and men move forward together, Bangladesh will move forward, and the world will move forward. He further added that DRU has taken various initiatives for the welfare of women journalists. At the same time, Maynul Hasan Sohel also announced the introduction of the Best Reporting Award for women journalists this year.

DRU Finance Secretary Sakhawat Hossain Sumon, Organizing Secretary Abdul Hai Tuhin, Office Secretary Rafiq Rafi, Publicity and Publication Secretary Mizan Chowdhury, Information Technology and Training Secretary Md. Borhan Uddin, Sports Secretary Md. Mujibur Rahman, Welfare Secretary Rafiq Mridha, Executive Members Md. Junaid Hossain (Junaid Shishir), Akhtaruzzaman, Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, and Md. Farooq Alam, along with other members, were present at the event.
