Two days ago, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a ban on internet use which includes YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc., for anyone under 16 years of age. He also announced a limitation on Internet access to anyone who is 16 to 18 years of age.(1) Aside from being a disguised move to facilitate the imposition of mandatory digital IDs for citizens of all ages, this enactment of mass censorship to “protect children” is also aimed at preventing the youth of England from accessing opinions and points of view that veer off from the narrative that a notable portion of Europe’s current leaders have been trying to drum into their heads. This narrative being the same call for austerity and perpetual war that Europeans have been dealing with for over two decades now.
According to leaders like Keir Starmer, Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen, Europe’s youth need to start preparing themselves for decades of war with Russia and consequently China and the rest of the Global South, which together make up about 75 to 80% of the world’s population.(2)
Currently, these European leaders are implementing a plan to devote 800 billion Euros to military restructuring in order to prolong “Project Ukraine”. They’ve proposed this even though the majority of military experts with any credibility left have conceded that the war is a lost cause for Ukraine.(3) To add confusion to desperation, upwards of 60% of the remaining population of Ukraine now wants the war to end quickly, in a diplomatic settlement.(4)
In reality, people like Starmer, Merz, von der Leyen and Macron aren’t the least bit concerned with the lives of the people of Ukraine, who they continue to view as cannon fodder for their ailing neoliberal/neocolonialist hegemonic project. Additionally, over the course of the last 3 and 1/2 years, due to a confluence of factors that we will not have time to fully address here, Europe’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war has plunged it into dangerous levels of inflation and near recession that it hasn’t experienced in decades.
It doesn’t seem to matter to these leaders that the people of Europe are largely against their proposals. In truth, all of this is happening because these leaders, who are all servants of the international banking system (and BlackRock), refuse to acknowledge that their unipolar dream of global neoliberal hegemony died about 4 years ago.(5),(5a) As the rest of the world shifts toward multipolarity, these apparently blind ideologues continue to pursue their neocolonialist dream. It seems they’d rather angle the floundering, debilitated European ship directly toward the oncoming iceberg of possible total/all-out global war than deal with their own failure.
The citizens of Europe, who are overwhelmingly against what these leaders are proposing, simply must wake up and seriously challenge this insanity soon.(6) The other option is to continue following the lead of these ignorant, war-obsessed ideologues. In a future article I’ll discuss some of the hope-inspiring challenges to these leaders’ cynical, nihilistic vision of the future for Europe.
