New Dreams at the Asian Games: How Realistic is Bangladesh’s Target in 26 Disciplines?

The Asian Games is the largest sporting event on the continent. Organized every four years by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), it is often dubbed the ‘Asian Olympics.’ Serving as a grand gathering for elite athletes from the world’s largest continent, almost all Asian nations participate. Beyond the Olympic Games, its importance in multi-sport competitions is paramount.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) has taken a major step ahead of the 20th Asian Games, set to take place in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan. The continent’s largest sporting extravaganza will commence in the Japanese regions on September 19, concluding on October 4. Bangladesh plans to send athletes to compete in a total of 26 disciplines. This effort to expand participation and forge a competitive presence on the international stage opens new doors of possibility, while simultaneously laying bare the difficult realities of infrastructural and long-term planning deficits.
While neighboring South Asian powerhouse India is rapidly consolidating its international sports standing, Bangladesh’s long history at the Asian Games yields a limited tally of success. Although past games brought achievements in cricket, kabaddi, and shooting, a gold medal remains elusive. BOA has set a fresh trajectory to move past this legacy.
Disciplines Bangladesh Plans to Participate In:
Team & Traditional Sports: Cricket, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Beach Handball, Basketball, and Rugby.
Promising & Combat Sports: Archery, Shooting, Wushu, Karate, Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, and Wrestling.
Individual & Racket Sports: Athletics, Swimming, Gymnastics, Golf, Weightlifting, Fencing, Surfing, Cycling, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Badminton.
Realistic Medal Hopes: Sports in Focus
Although Bangladesh aims to enter 26 events, sports analysts view medal prospects in four to five disciplines as truly realistic:
Archery & Shooting: Archery has shown the most visible international progress for Bangladesh over the past decade, while shooting historically generated multi-event success. These two disciplines offer the highest probability for medals.
Cricket (Men & Women): A major strength for Bangladesh at the continental level. Despite stiff opposition, strong performances in knockout rounds keep medal hopes alive.
Kabaddi, Wushu & Karate: Despite strong dominance from India, Iran, and Pakistan in kabaddi, Bangladesh holds a historical pedigree. Recent success in wushu and karate also inspires hope for individual surprises.
Unlike athletes from top Asian powerhouses like China, Japan, or South Korea- who train year-round with elite foreign coaches, sports science, and modern technology- Bangladesh faces a vastly different preparation landscape. Irregular international match exposure, budget constraints, and a lack of modern infrastructure remain core obstacles.
While various sports federations have begun team selection and training with assistance from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council, preparation momentum varies widely.
The Aichi-Nagoya Games will be more than just a platform to inflate participation numbers; it presents a major test for Bangladesh’s sports management. Beyond paperwork and plans, only efficient administration and structured international training can turn this 26-discipline ambition into reality.
