BCB Raises Cleaners’ Wages and Ensures Financial Transparency

By Maksuda Lisa (Dhaka Bureau)
Since taking over as the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Tamim Iqbal has drawn significant attention not only for on-field cricket developments but also for administrative reforms and humanitarian initiatives. In a fresh move, the country’s governing body for cricket has stepped up for the unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes- the stadium’s cleaning staff.
The BCB has implemented a whopping 47% salary hike for 33 cleaners working at the country’s premier cricket venue, the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, who had long been overlooked.
Salary Increment at a Glance
These workers play a vital role in keeping the country’s main and busiest cricket venue clean and usable day in and day out. Considering their rising cost of living, as a quality of life, the board approved the following adjustment:
* Previous Monthly Salary: BDT 8,500
* New Revised Salary: BDT 12,500
* Net Increase: BDT 4,000 (An approximate 47% increase)
From Grievance to Instant Solution: Eliminating the Middlemen
The catalyst for this positive change emerged during the recent series against New Zealand. BCB President Tamim Iqbal personally inspected the stadium’s galleries and washroom areas. During a direct interaction with the cleaning staff, a serious irregularity came to light.
The workers alleged that despite a daily allocation of BDT 650 per worker, they were receiving only around BDT 300 due to intermediaries. In other words, nearly half of their rightful earnings were being pocketed by a middleman syndicate.
Immediate Action by the BCB
Upon receiving the complaint, the board, led by Tamim Iqbal, took a strict stance. To eliminate any loopholes for corruption, the practice of distributing wages through middlemen was completely abolished. The BCB has now set up a system to transfer salaries directly into the individual bank accounts of each cleaner. Furthermore, an investigation has been launched to identify and penalize those responsible for the previous exploitation.
A New Wave of Reforms at BCB
The welfare and accountability drive extends far beyond the cleaning crew. Since Tamim Iqbal assumed leadership, a new culture of employee welfare and transparency has taken root within the BCB. Key reformative measures taken by the board recently include:
* Domestic Cricketers: A significant increase in the salary structure and match fees for domestic players.
* Women’s Cricket: Restructuring and revising the pay scale for women cricketers to bridge gaps.
* Administrative Transparency: Eradicating third-party involvement in financial transactions in favor of direct banking channels.
Social Media Praise and a Model of Empathetic Leadership
The news of the wage hike and the President’s hands-on approach to addressing grassroots issues has been widely applauded by cricket enthusiasts and civil society. On social media, many have hailed this sequential approach (Listening to complaints, Disbursing salaries directly via bank accounts, and Increasing wages) as a rare and exemplary precedent in the country’s sports arena.
Known for his long and successful career as an on-field captain, Tamim Iqbal is now proving his mettle as an administrator. By ensuring the rights of marginal workers alongside cricket stars, he has demonstrated that true leadership is just as impactful outside the boundary ropes as it is inside.
