Md. Shahabuddin, the 22nd President of Bangladesh, has resigned from his post after serving for three years and three months. Citing physical and mental health reasons, he sent his resignation letter addressed to the Speaker in accordance with Article 50(3) of the Constitution. His premature exit, with one year and nine months remaining in his tenure, marks the beginning of a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political history.
On Friday (July 24), National Parliament Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad cut short his official visit to Thailand and returned to Dhaka to confirm the development at a press conference held at the Parliament Building. He announced that pursuant to Article 54 of the Constitution, he will assume the duties of Acting President until a new President is elected.
A History of Unfinished Terms
Although the constitutional term for a President in Bangladesh is five years, very few individuals have completed their full tenure in the country’s 55-year history. Md. Shahabuddin now joins a long list of predecessors whose terms ended prematurely due to political unrest, military intervention, coups, or voluntary resignation.
Shahabuddin assumed office on April 24, 2023, during the tenure of the former Awami League government. Following the fall of the Awami League administration in August 2024 amid popular uprisings, he remained in office under the interim context, despite growing demands from various quarters for his removal.
Behind the Scenes: Health and Political Rumors
While the resignation letter officially cites physical and mental health issues, political analysts view the move as the result of deep political dynamics.
Speculation intensified recently over reports that during a medical trip to London on May 9, Shahabuddin held a phone conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently residing in India. Following these reports, calls for his resignation mounted significantly, culminating in his decision to step down.
Political Reactions
The President’s resignation has drawn strong reactions across the country’s political spectrum:
* Opposition Party (Jamaat-e-Islami): Opposition Leader and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, reacted by stating, ‘A dark shadow of autocracy has been lifted.’
* Other Parties: Political platforms including the NCP and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis welcomed the resignation while demanding accountability and justice regarding actions taken during the previous regime.
With the Speaker assuming the role of Head of State, Bangladesh enters the next phase of its ongoing political transition as it awaits the election of a new President.
